Lefties’ cheers for Lula’s Brazil victory should leave US citizens very worried

The left’s celebration of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva’s reelection victory is more reason to worry about Democrats sweeping next week’s US midterms.

Literally minutes after Lula was declared the winner, partisan Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the loser, conservative Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro, to surrender his passport and remain in the country, pending an investigation.

Bolsonaro was lucky to escape to the United States, which granted him a visa.

Yes, it’s possible the senator (not yet charged with anything) is guilty of some crimes.

But the prepared-in-advance order by a notoriously pro-Lula judge (and himself immersed in a corruption scandal), reportedly without even consulting Brazil’s prosecutor general, is hardly a sign of a healthy democracy.

Add to that Lula’s own past convictions for corruption charges, later tossed on technicalities.

And the fact that the election results themselves are suspect.

Lefty journalist Glenn Greenwald, reporting from Brazil, notes that Bolsonaro isn’t the only one to have gotten out of Dodge “to escape the tyrannical persecution of Alexandre de Moraes and the pro-Lula wing of the Supreme Court.”

Greenwald cites “dozens of Brazilian exiles who have done the same: dissident journalists, activists, bloggers, and politicians who all fled to avoid certain prison for political opposition.”

One wag claimed that, when it comes to lawfare, Lula is “[Sen.] Elissa Slotkin cubed.”

And America’s socialist left cheered his win with gusto.

“Congratulations to Lula on his extraordinary reelection victory,” gushed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

“The people united will never be defeated! Congratulations, President Lula,” cheered Mayor Zohran Mamdani on X.

Yet Lula’s continued rule looks like bad news for Brazil: The economy has flagged on his watch, with inflation outpacing wage increases and GDP growth sluggish, and the nation’s stock market plunged in the wake of his surprise victory.

Plus, of course, the whole crush-your-political-opposition-via-the-courts thing.

Then again, that’s pretty much what Democrats here vow to do if they gain power on Tuesday — and even more so if they take the White House in 2028.

A Dem House and/or Senate is guaranteed to launch probes of President Donald Trump and his team — with prosecutions of even the lowliest in the offing if Slotkin has her way.

No, America is not (yet) Brazil, but the growing power within the Democratic Party of progressives who’ve for decades cheering a long string of anti-democratic Latin leftists suggests it can happen here.

Add in Dems’ obsessive lawfare against Trump & Co. — with not a hint of regret even now — and everyone who threatens to get in the hard left’s way has serious reason to fear.
