Former Purdue Pharma chairman Richard Sackler<\/a> was ordered stop interfering with the sale of his sprawling Connecticut mansion \u2014 as the Sackler family\u2019s $7.4 billion opioid settlement threatens to cost him one of his luxury homes.<\/p>\n

A federal bankruptcy judge ruled Wednesday that Sackler, 81, and his wife, Lin Gao, lost their bid to keep the estate, which was pledged as collateral to help fund the family\u2019s opioid settlement<\/a>, according to Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Court documents don\u2019t estimate the home\u2019s value, according to the outlet. But the property in Greenwich is arguably one of the finest estates in town and has a reported municipal assessment of $65.45 million, according to a source familiar with the neighborhood. <\/p>\n

The ruling comes as Gao and her children reportedly continue to live in the mansion, complicating efforts to sell both the property and the artwork inside.<\/p>\n

Located at 60 Field Point Circle, the property spans nearly 10,500 square feet \u2014 with six bedrooms and eight bathrooms, according to Zillow.<\/p>\n

US Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane, presiding over the case in White Plains, rejected the couple\u2019s request to reconsider an earlier ruling that cleared the way for the sale, as well as their bid to put the process on hold.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe persistent fiction that seems to pervade these papers is that this is Dr. Sackler\u2019s house and Lin Gao\u2019s house. It is not,\u201d Lane said during Wednesday\u2019s hearing, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n

The judge stopped short of ordering the family to vacate the estate but warned that eviction or other sanctions could be on the table.<\/p>\n

Lane also noted that Sackler owns four other homes, including his primary residence in Florida.<\/p>\n

The mansion was previously transferred between two Sackler family trusts to free up funds for a $62 million settlement payment.<\/p>\n

The legal showdown is the latest chapter in the yearslong fallout from Purdue Pharma\u2019s role in America\u2019s opioid epidemic.<\/p>\n

Sackler, who previously served as Purdue\u2019s president and chairman, led the pharmaceutical company during its aggressive promotion of OxyContin, the powerful prescription painkiller at the center of thousands of lawsuits.<\/p>\n

The company twice pleaded guilty to criminal charges involving its marketing of the drug, though no Sackler family member has been criminally charged in connection with the scandal.<\/p>\n

Under Purdue\u2019s massive bankruptcy settlement, members of the Sackler family agreed to contribute billions toward resolving claims brought by state and local governments and other plaintiffs over the opioid crisis.<\/p>\n

Much of the money is intended to support addiction treatment, prevention and recovery efforts across the country.<\/p>\n

But the judge made clear Wednesday that continued efforts to hold onto the Greenwich mansion could delay payments to victims.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a victimless crime your clients are perpetrating,\u201d Lane told Stephan Hornung, an attorney representing the couple.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am profoundly concerned about the victims of the opioid epidemic having to wait for what\u2019s their due in terms of getting payment, by virtue of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The couple plans to appeal the earlier ruling concerning the property\u2019s sale, Hornung told the court.<\/p>\n
